Joe & Sue Paterno
Coach Joe Paterno's outstanding accomplishments on the football field have been well documented by journalists and the news media around the world, culminating with his induction into the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame. What may not be as well known are his generous donations to The Pennsylvania State University and charities such as the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association, for which he serves as national spokesperson.
Sue Paterno, Joe’s wife of 48 years, is the driving force of the partnership when it comes to improving the lives of others. And while Sue has graciously donated her time, passion and energy to these and other community activities, she has raised five children, all of whom have graduated from Penn State and have moved into successful careers.
In 2009 the CMTA presented Joe and Sue Paterno with its highest honor – a STAR Award for their lifetime of achievement and dedication to not just the CMTA, but for their charitable giving nationwide. On the heels of the 2009 STAR Award, a series of CMT public service announcements, featuring Joe Paterno, ran nationwide on the Big Ten Network. Joe’s influence and recognizable presence as spokesperson has had an immeasurable impact on the CMTA and has helped raise awareness among an even larger audience.
